Volta ao Algarve starts with a victory for the team
Etixx-Quick Step continues to win. Following the succesfol weekend at Spain they started well with a stage victory for Gianni Meersman in the Volta ao Algarve. Styby himself finished on a fifth place.
“We knew it would be a nervous final and that it would therefore be difficult to keep our train together. Lotto was pulling from the beginning, which was good for us. Petr Vakoc and Julien Vermote of our team gave them a hand.”
The final was as expected. “But we managed to stay well together. There were attacks in the last kilometer from Jurgen Roelandts and Alexandre Kolobnev, but I was able to close the gap and join the train for Gianni again. ‘Kwiato’ set us off with 200 meters to go.”
“I was in ‘Kwiato’ his wheel, but Gianni went already. He was faster than Ben Swift and Paul Martens and won the stage. With me on fifth place and ‘Kwiato’ on ninth we finished with three guys in the top ten, so we did a really good job as a team.”
