Styby expected a total other result in the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain. Here he wanted to show something. But: it turned out differently. “I feel guilty about the teammates that have worked hard for me the whole day.”
The ninth stage ran from Antequera to Valdepeñas de Jaén about 174 kilometers and went constantly on and off. “The start was very quick and the breakaway was also quickly formed. A pleasant start of the stage, but later the situation was a lot different.”
“With more than forty kilometers from a third category climb, the pace increased seriously. It went quickly to the finals. The team worked for me, because I wanted to get a good result on that steep final climb.”
The team put him in a good position at the foot of the second last climb. “They have done perfectly. In the descent I could maintain in front, but just before the last climb it went wrong and I lost a few positions again.”
“I had to start too far, but to be honest: with 500 meters from the top I exploded. I finished as 37th and could not do better today. I feel guilty towards my teammates, because everyone has worked hard for me…”
